COMPETITION AND COMPARISON – Creating the life you want!

In this world of social media flooding our daily lives a theme has arisen in the last few months. Something that is less talked about then say cyber bullying or the general dangers that we are made aware of with social media and the internet.

The topic of competition and comparison is not only a social media theme but let’s face it, it’s a life theme. I don’t know about you but up until recently this comparison thing was a real problem for me and I know that it is a problem for so many.

I believe that there are a few key things that will help you overcome this trap of comparison.

Realise that you are viewing the highlight reel of someone’s life. Instagram in particular is definitely not something you want to view and actually believe you are viewing someone’s true self. Instagram is where we post (especially people with large followings) our very best photos. There is an extreme amount of thought and sometimes editing that goes into these photos. Plus, you are seeing exactly what that person wants you to see. You aren’t seeing them potentially on a ‘bad hair day’ or a sad day. Say you are seeing a gorgeous meal out in a café…but just maybe that was their only outing that week. It is clear to see how we can deceive ourselves. Instagram truly is the highlight reel and not a true representation of who we are as people.

True Happiness comes from appreciating what you already have. I have learnt this the hard way. There was a time that I longed for my very own designer handbag. I would watch so many seemingly perfect YouTubers with their Chanel, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton handbags. I would think if I had that handbag I would almost become a part of that world. What quickly became apparent when I got my bag after the initial euphoria dissipated, was that it really was just another bag. Being designer it was a very expensive bag, but nonetheless when everyday life returned it was another way to carry my stuff from A to B. I am appreciative now of things that cost me $2 as much as something that cost me $200. These things do not define us. Life is more than stuff!

The last thing is you are UNIQUE. Do you realise how unique you really are? You are not a carbon copy of someone else. This is never truer than when we look under a microscope. There are over 7 billion people on the earth right now. However, amongst these 7 billion individuals no two people have the same fingerprint. This boggles my mind but conveys one single thought – I AM UNIQUE. I do not need to compare myself to anyone, in fact I cannot compare myself to anyone. I will never match up. I am Unique! I love this thought. I may admire someone else but essentially I am different, I am special. I can create my own life and it can be whatever I choose. I find this thought so empowering and freeing and I hope you take it away with you if you are caught in the comparison trap.

No one is better than you and you are no better….this comparison, this competition…is a way to distract you from having YOUR best life possible. So let’s get our eyes off ‘perfect’. Let’s steer ourselves away from someone else’s path and step back onto our own. Let’s create the life we want!

This is SUCH a beautiful post!!!!!! And yes we need that reminder that the materialistic world is only temporary and is no source for happiness. I absolutely love what you wrote, word for word, and completely agree. I have felt the same sometimes, thinking if I JUST had a Louis Vuitton bag like the real housewives of Melbourne, or “Ladies of London”, then I can move up in the world, but we need to take a step back and see what’s MOST important!!!!! What a great post.
